On Foolishness

There is some outside chance I might possibly grasp the concepts of stellar gravitational forces.  I may quickly grasp the concepts of angular momentum.  I might come to understand particles and gases filtering different spectrums of light and condensation of gaseous Dihydrogen monoxide suspending on thermal currents in the atmosphere.  However, if reasoning this out, I miss the beauty, I am so much less than the child, ignorant of these causes, who rejoices in the foolishness of a sunrise, shining burnt orange through high clouds.

       Faith is foolishness; for it to be obtained by all; the quick and the slow, it could be no other way.  Were it to be gleaned after a time, by some calculation with pencil and paper, it would be the prize reserved for only the clever.  Were it to be captured by nimble minds employing great deduction, it would be the earned wages of that labor and beyond the reach of those blessed with simpler intellect. For those burdened by great reason, discerning, deliberating, calculating, minds, this foolishness is near impossible to tolerate, much less accept.  The greater the intellect, the greater is the affront to sensibilities, to reason.  “… to whom much is given, from him much will be required.”

      Faith is not something to be earned. It is the gift of God available to the childlike and the wise equally.  Simpler minds, unencumbered by the constraints of reason find faith a simple gathering, something merely accepted as a gift given without strings.  For the more complex minded it is a great difficulty requiring something outside the comfortable confines of reason. Beyond reason, indeed unreasonable, it requires more from those with more; it demands the surrender of self.  In this manner, God has leveled the playing field, made faith available to all, the quick-witted and the dull, the blessed and the burdened, and all in between.  All access His gift in the very same manner, childlike faith.

(The Gospel of Luke)

            Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

(The Gospel of John)

            But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

(Paul’s letter to the Church in Ephesus)

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God

~~~~~~
(Paul’s first letter to the Church in Corinth)
            For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
                        “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
                        And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
            Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
            For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.  But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”   And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
~~~~~~

(The Book of Hebrews)

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

~~~~~~
(The Gospel of John)
            And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
            The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
            Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Only in my old age, am I coming to realize that it is in the foolishness of beauty and love, lives joy.  Only in the unreasonable foolishness of faith are the handles by which that joy may take hold of me.
broken?
yes we’re broken … it’s what we are
but it’s not WHO we are
we are the redeemed,
   the saved,
      the bride of Christ
         children of the Most High God,
            the repository of the Spirit of the Great I AM,
               the possessor for the Mind of El Shaddai
                  joint heirs with Jesus to the very foundations of heaven
                     we are the occupying army in a defeated land
                          sent to teach all He has commanded
                              to make disciples
we are …                HIS
Praise God, we are His.
a song for suffering
this side of eternity, life is broken
to be sure it is filled with glorious moments; the birth of a child, sweet salvation, a father’s smile, the touch of a beloved wife, a fractional glimpse of an infinitesimal idea of God’s glory, true worship
but life is still broken. our lives, all of them, are broken at some point, many points, in some way, many ways, and too few of them small.
physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally, spiritually broken; mostly irreparably broken
we trundle on,
we do not lose heart
… we are being prepared
for the eternal
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. — 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV**)
I am a Church Member
A few months ago, my pastor introduced an excellent book to our church called “I Am a Church Member” by Thom S. Rainer. I highly recommend the work, it presents a view of church membership that I’ve always suspected but had never seen in practice.
At the very end of the book is a culmination of the work.  It reads almost like a contract between the member and his local church … no between a church member and His Savior God.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I Am a Church Member
I am a church member. I like the metaphor of membership. It’s not membership as in a civic organization or a country club. It’s the kind of membership given to us in 1 Corinthians 12: “Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it” (1 Cor. 12: 27). Because I am a member of the body of Christ, I must be a functioning member, whether I am an “eye,” an “ear,” or a “hand.” As a functioning member, I will give. I will serve. I will minister. I will evangelize. I will study. I will seek to be a blessing to others. I will remember that “if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Cor. 12: 26).

I am a church member. I will seek to be a source of unity in the church. I know there are no perfect pastors, staff, or other church members. But neither am I. I will not be a source of gossip or dissension. One of the greatest contributions I can make is to do all I can in God’s power to help keep the church in unity for the sake of the gospel. I am a church member. I will not let my church be about my preferences and desires. That is self-serving. I am in this church to serve others and to serve Christ. My Savior went to a cross for me. I can deal with any inconveniences and matters that are just not my preference or style.

I am a church member. I will pray for my pastor every day. His work is never-ending. His days are filled with constant demands for his time—with the need to prepare sermons, with those who are rejoicing in births, with those who are traveling through the valley of the shadow of death, with critics, with the hurts and hopes of others, and with the need to be a husband and a father. My pastor cannot serve our church in his own power. I will pray for God’s strength for him and his family every day.

I am a church member. I will lead my family to be good members of this church as well. We will pray together for our church. We will worship together in our church. We will serve together in our church. And we will ask Christ to help us fall deeper in love with this church, because He gave His life for her.

I am a church member. This membership is a gift. When I received the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, I became a part of the body of Christ. I soon thereafter identified with a local body and was baptized. And now I am humbled and honored to serve and to love others in our church. I pray that I will never take my membership for granted, but see it as a gift and an opportunity to serve others and to be a part of something so much greater than any one person or member.

I am a church member.
And I thank God that I am.

Now What?

Now what??
After all that now what??
What happens now??

Many years ago a kid in our youth group gave me a bracelet, little plastic beads on an elastic string.  The beads were four letters; WWJD; it stood for “What Would Jesus Do?”.  Its cute, trite but cute; I hung it on my rear-view mirror in my truck.  Bad idea.  My wife would simply point at it during those times I vocally questioned the intelligence of other drivers.  Or, when she wasn’t there, it would swing against the mirror at the oddest times, making just enough noise to draw my attention.  Yes it was trite, maybe even a little juvenile, but more than once it drove a stake through my heart … still does, and the bracelet is long gone.

So now what?? What of the body … His body … ??
Who really is the head of the body?? … and what would He do??

As Christians we exist to glorify God, we are here to point to Him, make Him known, make Him famous; where we are, where we go, in what we do and what we say.  The world should see Him in us, they will know is by our love  (John 13:35).  According to John 17, they will know Him by our unity, our love for each other.
“”The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,  I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.””
— John 17:22‭-‬23 ESV**

we are one, “so that the world may know” …

So … now what??

Would you rather be right … or reconciled??

… or maybe I should just butt out …

Dangerousness of Drifting

Good read.

Nick Elizondo

 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

~ Judges 16:20

Five days after Christmas 1972, Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 departed from JFK Airport heading to Miami International Airport.  As it began it’s decent into Miami when the pilots flipped the switch to let down the landing gear they noticed the landing gear indicator light on their dash did not light up. As they began to assess the situation they received orders from the tower to climb to 2,000 feet and the hold due west over the Everglades.

What  tragically transpired next was while the pilots were working on the situation wondering if the light was simply out or if they had a real issue, the…

The Body

hmmm… where to start this without sounding like a pompous jerk … … oh well, sometimes I’m a pompous jerk so here goes …

A guy recently asked me if there were any good churches around, before I could answer he fired off a litany of requirements this new church must meet; he liked contemporary music, his wife liked old hymns so it must have “blended” worship.  It must have a dynamic youth group for his 16-year-old son with weekly activities and it must have a menu of programs geared to his 9-year-old daughter.  His wife wanted a small intimate women’s bible study, but he didn’t care about a men’s ministry because he probably wouldn’t participate anyway … well he didn’t say exactly that but I caught the drift.  He then went on to complain about his current church, music was bland he didn’t “feel” anything, the sermons were blander, the pastor always seemed rushed but always preached longer than 20 minutes, there wasn’t enough participation in either the youth group or the programs for children and the women’s ministry was a bunch of old women yakking.  He finally took a breath and looked at me expectantly …
… I said, “It sounds like you’re already in the perfect church for you and your family.”

He looked at me like I had just poured a grape Icee down the back of his pants.  “Haven’t you been listening??  Our current church doesn’t fit any of our needs!”

No it doesn’t.
Instead of looking for a church that meets your needs, find a church that needs you.
I’ll say that again ….
Instead of looking for a church that meets your needs, find a church that needs you.
A church that has everything you need, probably doesn’t need you.

Scripture is filled with references to “the body”; 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4.  The church is the “Body of Christ”, the Body of which He is the head.  Each part (person) being fitted together to make the whole, each part (person) bringing its function, talent to the whole, each part accomplishing what it was designed to accomplish coming together to become more than simply the sum of its parts.

Now, if the church is the body of Christ (and it is) how should it behave?  He came to seek and save that which was lost … wouldn’t His body be about that work??  or would it focus inward on its own needs.  If His body allows Him to be its head and follows that head, would it be more concerned about its needs or the needs of the least of these?  Would it be focused on the music inside the church or being His hands and His feet outside the church??

Still reading? … let’s see what I can do about that …

Imagine His body … wounded … broken … bleeding … in pain … in need.

Now, imagine walking away ….

Is His body worth saving, worth fighting for??  Is it worth sacrificing your needs, your wants, your opinion … your pride??  Is it worth whatever you can do, everything you can do?? … or do you just walk away and look for something that fits your needs …

… I’m so glad He didn’t just walk away …

Who?

It’s been a while so don’t expect much.  I’ve been content in re-posting the excellent work of others and avoiding my keyboard all together.

———-

Most of you who know me, know I’m a little “different”, some may say “odd”, others “goofy” or “weird”.  I cannot disagree with any of those adjectives and more, you see, you only get to see that tiny part of me that slips out between the fingers of the death-grip I have on who I really am.

I am judgmental, quick to anger, vengeful, resentful, unmerciful, mean, spiteful, arrogant, prideful, unfaithful, hypocritical, unrighteous and more.

You get to see the disguise, the smiling face, the glad-hand, the “Hi, how’s it going” while the beast of exquisite rage seethes just below the surface.

You get to see the barely controlled facade that lies about who I really am … that lies about WHAT I really am … and the battle inside that furies between what I know and what I feel …

… and then a still small voice way in the back of my head says
                                           “you are Mine

… and my heart breaks with the depth of mercy contained in that simple phrase …

I am His,

in Him I am not condemned,

in Him is redemption,

in Him is salvation,

in Him is hope,

in Him is life,

in Him I live and move and have my being.

That other is not who I am … I am His, His is whose I am.

He is truth, and in Him the façade becomes truth and I am saved.

I am saved, praise God in His heaven, I am SAVED!

The Confused Christian: Translations

Biblical Word Studies

“Poetry in translations is like taking a shower while wearing a raincoat.”

Walking into a book store or searching online for a Bible, there are many options in English. Which one is the correct or “authorized” English version?  Early on, I thought the easier, more acceptable answer was from one of my teachers, “The best translation is the one you read.”  To quote a former Russian missionary, “We have a purer translation of the word today than we have ever had.”

In going out witnessing, I have been confronted on occasion about translations, from traditionalist and other religious sects touting their own translation. To help guide me into a proper response, I took a stroll through history on translations.

First stop is the Old Testament, which was originally written in Hebrew and a couple of later books in Aramaic. With the finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, we…

A Continuing Conversation

Excellent read.

In this article, my brother Harry continues a conversation with a young Jewish man, opening the new testament wide and exposing the precious gift of salvation through Jesus’ work on the cross and His victory in the empty tomb.

chrstianlearning

To Galia (גליה),

Since you had to leave that Sunday afternoon from the fair, I have been burdened to finish the conversation in which we began.  I am accustomed to people walking away, but there is something special about you.  You wanted to know about Jesus and you later contacted me via Facebook, which I hope was for us to finish the conversation.  I was impressed with the answers you gave me to the questions, and I can only perceive come from a good heart.

I do not know if our paths will ever cross again or if we would have the opportunity to finish the conversation face to face, so I am writing the conclusion of the conversation personally for you.  As we discussed about Judgment Day, I know I will be judged to a higher degree, for I am showing you scripture and guiding you.  The…

Holy Spirit (רוח קודש)

Biblical Word Studies

“For the Holy Spirit of discipline will flee from the deceitful, and will withdraw himself from thoughts that are without understanding, and he shall not abide when iniquity comes in.”  “And who shall know Your thought, except You give wisdom, and send Your Holy Spirit from above.” (Wis 1:5, 9:17)

One of the mysterious things about Christianity, if not the most mysterious, is the work of the Holy Spirit. It is something I do not understand very well, nor something I can accurately and precisely describe.  I have found the Holy Spirit is something experienced in various ways, levels and degrees, yet I have no idea when, where or why it manifest itself.

The purpose of this study is to see what I can glean from scripture, obtaining a better understanding with my personal experiences. The first place I like to journey in my biblical word studies is into the…

The Hidden Moreka and the Way (pt 2)

Biblical Word Studies

In part one of this study, I gave examples of why I believe Isaiah 30:20 is Messianic, and that Isaiah is prophesying about a Master Teacher that will no longer be hidden.  When I went back over the notes of my study, I had forgotten to include the following verse in relation to Is 30:20, your Master Teacher would be no longer be hidden.

Isaiah 40:5 “The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

In the published work, I concluded there was a remez, or deeper meaning of verse 20, which would be found in the following verse in Isaiah 30:21. Some believe Jesus often used remez in his teachings, and gave hidden messages to those very knowledgeable of scripture.  Here’s a link for further study on remez or Google remez or PaRaDeS: https://www.thattheworldmayknow.com/remez

The Hidden Moreka and the Way (pt 3)

Biblical Word Studies

Although the Lord has given you bread of privation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left.  Is 30:20-21

The previous two parts on studying these two verses have taught me more about the Hebrew language, and the use of imagery in the words to help understand more of what God’s word wants to show me. I believe in all the studies, this one has an application that I need right now in advancing my witness for Jesus.  Why do I fear being a witness sometimes, maybe this wrap-up will encourage and embolden us.

Scripture has a weird way of meaning something…

The Birthmark of a Christian: Change

Biblical Word Studies

As I pursue strengthening my tools in witnessing, one of my weaker points is the reassurance of salvation to a fellow Christian who is struggling.  In this writing, I am continuing with part 2 of 5 for the birthmarks of a Christian.  This is taken from a sermon of Dr. David Jeremiah, where he list five birthmarks of a Christian, titled the Assurance of Salvation.  With the first birthmark, I learned confession is a coming into an agreement with a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ our Lord, and when this happens, something changes on the inside.  One of my evangelist friends explains to others this way, “There was a person you once were, and there is the person you are now.”  Something is different about the person you are becoming through Christ.

 Dr. David Jeremiah expresses the change in four parts.

Pray Scripture – Psalm 51

Psalm 51 (ESV)
Confession – Repentance

3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Restoration
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right  spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Empowerment

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

Boldness
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Compassion
18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
build up the walls of Jerusalem;
19 then will you delight in right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Birthmark of a Christian: The Sinner’s Prayer

Biblical Word Studies

After publishing the first birthmark of a Christian, confession, I had a witnessing experience, where after a lady from Jamaica prayed (what some would call a Sinner’s Prayer), she said she felt the same as before.  I felt it didn’t work, but it should work!  She had been in church for 18 years, but was not saved.  She admitted she was not going to heaven, so I used the training God has given me over the past year, attempting to lead her to the first steps of Christianity, Christ and Him crucified.

In the birthmark of confession, I learned of an example for the Hebrew word confession (Yadah) and knowing (Yada), and concluded with the Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew, that confession as used by Paul in Romans 10:8-13 was “a covenant between two people or between a King [God] and his people and was considered to…

From Victory Unto ….

“We are not fighting FOR victory, we are fighting FROM victory” — Pete Briscoe

Think about that for just a minute … notice the RADICAL difference??

We are NOT an invading force seeking to defeat a powerful enemy. The enemy is already defeated, he is already lost, what remains are a few isolated pockets of resistance designed to impede the actions of the occupying force of the victorious King. We are that occupying force ….

We are not here to win a battle, the battle is already won … so is the war. We are here to set captives free, set at liberty the oppressed, heal the broken-hearted, preach the Gospel to the poor. We’re not here to destroy and enemy, he is already destroyed. We are here to set free those he has captured, imprisoned, damaged and stripped of life. We are here to show His love to those confused, misguided and blinded by that defeated enemy.

The lost are not the enemy. I’ll say that again; the lost are NOT the enemy, they are the captives we are to set free, they are the oppressed we are to set at liberty, they are the broken-hearted, the damaged that need healing.

Maybe, just maybe, we should stop treating them like the enemy … they are, after all, why He came, why He suffered the shame of the cross. They ARE who we WERE. Instead of demanding they follow a law we have failed follow, maybe we should introduce them to the author of that law (and everything else). Instead of demanding they ACT like they are something else, maybe we should act like who we should be. Maybe we should just fall on our knees and pray for them with all our heart, that He would give sight to the blind and they might see, hearing to the deaf that they might hear and turn.

I dunno, maybe, just maybe, when they ask us to bake them a cake, we should bake them two.

So now what??

Luke 4:17-19 (NKJV)*1
17And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Matthew 5:40-42 (NKJV)*1
40If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” ― Charles H. Spurgeon

What? Me worry?

madd2I recently posted a video on Facebook, and was actually surprised but the reactions, both public and private.  I thought the content of the video was quite clear, and dead on … I may be in a minority … but that is nothing new.  I frequently poke fun at politics in general, I find it and its most ardent fans much more entertaining than I probably should.  This is a one of the few times I will address politics in a serious manner, so let me clarify my position on politics in general, and  specifically, the current election cycle.

God is in control.

I don’t care who wins this election.  I don’t care, because it doesn’t matter.  That’s right, I said it, it does not matter.  If God wants Ms. Clinton in the White House nothing I do will prevent it, if He doesn’t, nothing anyone does will permit it, the exact same is true about Mr. Trump.

“”Oh but Randy, it will be horrible if __<fill in your current bridge troll>__ gets elected, … illegal immigrants … the debt … the Supreme Court … our rights … Christians persecuted … wars … Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes … human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!””    — (apologies to Dr. Venkman)

God is in control.

The sky will not fall if Ms. Clinton or Mr. Trump is elected unless God commands it to fall.  The world will not end one second before the fullness of time as determined by God.  When God determines it WILL fall, no one in the White House will be able to do ONE thing to prevent it.  According to MY scripture, He has PROMISED that it WILL get a lot worse …. a LOT worse …. before it gets better …. a LOT better.

God is in control.

But one thing those of us who claim to be Christian need to consider; if God used the Babylonians to discipline His chosen people, killing most and scattering the rest into exile across the known world, what makes US believe we can behave as we do and get away without discipline? How can we fail to love the “least of these” as He loved us, as He has commanded us and not expect consequences for those actions?  Maybe we deserve whoever wins this election??

God is in control.

And, you know, that “hate the sin, love the sinner” crud doesn’t hold water when you act like you hate the sinner as well.  Read Matthew 5:40-42 (the letters are in red) and tell me what a Christian baker should have done and how the Body of Christ should behave. What would He have done?? What should we do??  We Christians are so quick to condemn the sins we don’t commit, the only things quicker are our excuses for the sins we do commit, the sins we don’t just tolerate in ourselves, but cherish.  Which of us is less a sinner than are the targets for our stones?? Which of us were any better before He chose us?? “” … for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God””

God is in control.

No, I’m not sticking my head in the sand (or anywhere else), and no I’m not abdicating my responsibility as an American … well maybe I am at that … maybe I should … Maybe as a Christian I should remember that this is not my home, I am merely passing through, a sojourner, a pilgrim. I am not my own, I am His, His workmanship, specifically created in Christ Jesus for the work He has prepared beforehand for me here.  That work has little to do with politics and great to do with loving the people He loves, the lost; He loves them, us, me so much He’d rather die than be separated.  That work will remain without regard to who sits in the White House.

God is in control.

Don’t know about you, but I find great comfort in the fact that God really is in control.  Whether our ship is sinking or being raised is not my concern.  My concern, our concern, our CHIEF concern should be His work here, loving the lost, sharing His Good News with everyone we meet, and being His voice in this wilderness.  Whether our feet be placed on a pedestal or our necks on a chopping block, we are His and are to be about His work.

God is in control.

If we Christians are indeed looking to, expecting, His glorious return, then we should also be looking to and expecting the promised tribulation heralding that return.    If this truly be the end, then Praise God!!, “even so come Lord Jesus”.

A Sweet Witnessing Experience (עֵד / עֵדהֵ)

Biblical Word Studies

“A faithful witness will not lie. A true witness delivers souls.”  Proverbs 14:5,25

 God is so confounding with surprise and wonder, that I never know what to expect, especially when it comes to talking with other people about their eternal destination. In my mind, I make preparations, what people will say, or how they will react.  I contemplate and pray about how to respond, yet when the time comes to be a witness, I find myself still being Divinely trained.

What does it mean to be a witness? A witness gives testimony, the attestation of a fact of event, which furnishes evidence or proof.  It is in my experiences, faith and hope with a living God, that I share with others.  I speak what I know, have seen, felt, and experienced.  This does not mean I need to be astute in the scriptures to share my faith.  (Yes, the enemy…

An Easter Carol – A Parody of Charles Dickens

Biblical Word Studies

Prologue

As Christmas time approaches, I have fancied myself upon a tradition of reading the classic, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dicken. This story is about a main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, a very rich miser who will forgo the immediate comforts of life, to reduce any and all expenses, fulfilling the proverb, How much is enough?  One more dollar than I currently have.

This story also impresses upon me a Christian influence, and I adore the opening, which very vividly explains that Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s life-long business partner, had died.  The details of his death are not known, but the assurance of his passing is pronounced.  The story begins seven years after the death of Jacob.  Seven, being a symbolic number in Christianity, as I see Dickens portraying a seven year cycle of completeness.

As I have read A Christmas Carol through the years, I began to see other…
